Pre production

my idea is that effort is important than talent (skills)

and this is my topic as well, and I might interview some one in school who is successfull in one’s field, and ask them about talent and effort. and I want to unveil the relation ship between  the talent and effort, to keep in balance. No one can be successful only with talent without effort and vice versa

Characters:: I will have interviewee who is successful in their field,

Locations :: would be  UIUC campus and specifically art building.

B-roll :: I also thinking of interview others(random people) with the question that which do you think more important between effort and talent and the reason why.

production

Authorship :: I would use text for questions and I was also thinking about add my voice for narration. For the beginning, since the part is generally about my inspiration and motivation which get me start to work on the video, it is pretty much from my self, so it is relevant to use mine, my voice for beginning narration. However when it comes to the questions, I personally think that I don’t really want to interrupt, the follow of interviewee’s voice. so I would use text for the any other lingual procession than beginning. I have got bunch of b rolls of inside the studio, and I would get even more.

Content :: Mostly, what I want to have in my video is about genius and about how to ‘overcome’ them and for that being true, I  would need some ‘genuine story’  form who have that experience, and, thoughtful story line and fine visual aid. for the content, I am thinking having either the story that I built up or story from others.

Shots :: Some photo images of Thomas Edison, and images of some other who is genius, some b rolls of art making…..

Anxieties and Obstacles ::  I feel pretty anxiety due to the very sow processing. I do not know why but it is feel like I face obstacles every single steps it is pretty different from the previous video making that I already knew that what I was going to do and how it was going to be, from the beginning. and I hope my video and story would be relevant for all others.

Reflection :: Editing process is going slower than I thought. and since I decided to have a interview in my video so I have got them. I wanted to interview Conrad Bekker who is one of the faculty in FAA college with the same questions: Do you think you are genius type, have you ever met genius in your field ? etc, but he refused to do interview so ( he wanted to rather answer my question through email)I emailed him and waiting for his answer but I am still figuring out how to use them or whether or not U use them. There is one thing interesting that I found is that… unlike my expectation, most of my interviewees did not hesitate to say that they are talented.

What Do You Have :: I have got couple of interviews about how other are dealing with the issue and opinion on my belief,  and some other clips that I can use for the opening of the video .and any other relevant images for my story

Reshoots :: So far, I don think I am going to reshoot.

Evolution :: for this project, my plan and idea have been so swung, I was going to interview someone, but I decided not to but again I changed my plan on interview people. And by interviewing them finally I found the way that I should go. I figured out what I should fill out the other space with.

Timeline :: for tomorrow I am going to interview some other more and during whole weekend I will focus on editing and keep reviewing and re editing for the time that I have left.

reflection

Process ::As always the most key moment is when I actually do interview with people. They always provides me much more valuable and thoughtful answer beyond my expectation, and by the interview it finally all other parts are determined regarding b rolls, music, additional images so yes, interview is really key moment, and other than that the editing process is very significant too because as I work on it , it makes me see clear what I an losing and what I ve got

Feedback :: Please see reflection page

Self-reflection :: I became realized that I am a type of person, who have no trouble when I got sparkling idea, than everything others are done so fast, but when I feel that nothing really sparks me than everything goes so slow down, although I keeps working on it, I function in so low efficiency, but I tried to keep me working, so it was meaningful opportunity to overcome my self, and provide me a time to speculate about the ‘geniusness’ in art and art making.

Future :: I think it would be able to be screened in another art class maybe, and any where there is a person who having a hard time dealing with his insignificant talent.

Final Question :: Please see reflection page.

Reflection

Firstly, I am really glad that I completed the module 3 video that means a lot to me. I had a beautiful conversation with my colleagues and that taught me a lot. Like module 2, i dealt with” art ” ( I dint really mean to fill my whole semester with art themed videos, but it has turned out that way.I think that is because it is the most significant issue  to me. ) I talked more about the attitude toward art and art making.
Honestly Yes, I was little sad about feed back from others. I want to talk about those issues a bit,

firstly ,the different typo. in my video, questions were black bold typo and answer from Josh was white and some one told me that made them little confused because they are not united. However, the thing is that they cant be united. My questions are black because it is general statement, and it is just switch for making it happened. but his answer, and Caro’s answer has to be different from my question because its their genuine idea which has a value, and I considered visual aspect of typo as well.

and the use of ‘little me’ ( drawing kid) b roll, that girl represents me and you. Who have never wanted to be a genius or have never competed with genius? Every one has been there.  Also the latter ‘little me’ with Josh’s narration represents pure selves just enjoying and concentrating on her self.

My feed bock from others mostly were about the ‘cohesiveness’, and open ended ending rather than make a clear conclusion.  I think the part of reason is that I tried to deal with too many layers in my video : art, art making, genius in art history, tenacity, talent and the role of artist. There was too many conceptual things  going on.

On top of that here is what I want to talk, As i study art, as I learn how to use visual language, construct image,  have it layered in context,  I have learned that art is very intelligent, sensitive and logical. So it was like art making is creating logically constructed image and have references layered beneath the image, and it can be perfectly explained with social , historical, cultural discourses. But one day, I thought ‘ is that it?”” is art something can be explained, clearly concluded at the end ? Art is not a puzzle. art is not a math equation.I think art should leave the room for further reflection. Art should open ended and that is why art can be loved and be treated so preciously throughout the history. if Vincent Van Gogh clearly concluded his painting  it could not have been loved until 20 century.I tried to make a video piece like art piece that help you can find your own answer rather than just give you a answer.

and overall taking writing with video class was one of the best choice that I made. I could get very critical lesson from the all process of   getting a idea, building a story and taking a shoot and editing  them. I am pretty sure that this experience that I got from this class would help me a lot for working on art making and doing my job.

and lastly, thank you for the teaching Meadow, your creative teaching inspired me a lot. and if I have ever a chance teaching others art, I want to be a instructor like you. the time we have been together was so precious.   Thank you sincerely.

This I believe Pre production Journal

Topic :: My video is about the effort vs talent. We have learn so many general lessons about importance of effort such as ‘practice make perfect’, ‘ genius is one percent of inspiration and 99% of perspiration’.. But as we live, Those meaningful lessons turns out white lie to make ‘normal people ‘ not to feel bad about the fact that they are not genius. Steve Jobs, Mark Zucuberg, Bill gates, and other genius artists are just nailing in their field with no hard. I don’t know what is true, Throughout making this video I would like to unveil the relationship between success, talent, and effort.

Characters ::  I have not decided yet whom I will interview with. But, He or she would be the one who is more or less successful in ones field so that able to tell be about the secret of talent and effort.

Locations ::  The location would be wherever the interviewee is. But I wish I can meet him or her within campus….

B-roll ::  I will get many example of geniuses who made great success. For example, Steve jobs, Bill gates, and how interviewees works in one’s office or studio. And bunch of other stuffs that can be used for referring talenot vs effort.

Take Away :: At the end of video , I want viewers to understand the importance of effort than the talent. Everyone has talent, but you can bring it out your and make it useful only when you are ready to put an enough effort. Viewers including myself, should remember that what makes genius is one percent of inspiration but what makes success is ninety-nine percent of perspiration.

Summarize :: I don’t even know how it would be turned out eventually. But I am sure that it would be something which prove the meaning of effort that I made. I wish it would be so so that we can continue working hard, no matter whether you are talented or not.

Plan of Action ::  As soon as I figured out whom I am going to shot, (I will definitely figure it out within this week and will contact him or her.) I will spent weekend coming up with good questions and initial sketch of scenes. On next Monday I will checking out equipments. The actual interview would be done approximately during next week, and once I shot it I will be working on editing in week 13.

This I Believe essay

Belief: effort is important than talent

There is one of Thomas Edison’s well known quotes “genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percents of perspiration,” That has always been helped me whenever I feel frustrated about my insignificant artistic talent. With “ practice makes perfect” Edison’s quotes was my favorite. However, one random article that I encountered on the internet shocked me because it said that His quote actually means the importance of inspiration than ninety-nine percent of effort. In other words ninety-nine percent of effort is nothing without one percent of talent. People often see this as emphasizing on effort, but it truly is emphasizing talent. Wow. Thomas Edison betrayed me. Like the way I feel about the truth of Edison quote, we, the normal people have sometimes been betrayed by the world. Since when I was a little girl, my parents, teacher had taught me that if I work hard, I can be the best, I can be successful no matter if I am talented or not. Sometimes I feel I am talented ( at everything art math literature), sometimes I feel disappointed at myself, then I can start work hard again meditating the lesson referring the importance of effort. However, despite this fact, Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, and bunch other genius artists continuously reminding me that who rule the world eventually is handful of genius out of 7 billion mankind.

Nevertheless, the reason why I hold this belief true is because I am not genius. And I know there’s something more than success in my life.  It might sound sad a bit that I stick with this belief because I am not genius. Yes, It is sad not to be a genius especially in this competitive and busy running world like these days. But, we need to take it. And as you accept that you are not genius, you don’t need to torture yourself to be a something you cannot be. Also, there is lots of other things meaningful than being a genius and successful. So , What can be meaningful than success? It is definitely not money. Probably love? Family? and Friendship ? Well, those are too common. The more important thing is that you will be learning more out of your life than when if you do not have to work for it.   And you can find who you really are. That is because you would spend many times blaming yourself and thinking yourself by realizing you are not genius. Genius does not need such time meditating and thinking about oneself. They just produce. They keep producing and creating. In other words, consuming oneself. But, we? We need a time, time to agonize ourselves and to fuel to keep run an d through that time we get to know ourselves.

If you compete with genius in your field, there’s nothing worse than this. But as it is painful, you will find you self developed much by confronting them. That is one merit that we have but geniuses. And we should make it useful.

Children killed in U.S air strike on Taliban commander

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/04/08/world/asia/years-worst-attack-on-united-states-in-afghanistan.html?hp&_r=0

1.It just caught my eyes as soon as I open the New York times page. ‘Children’, ‘killed’, ”Taliban’, and ‘strike’, combination of those words automatically made me feel uncomfortable and I ended up clicking it.  18 people were killed by  the U.S air strike, and more than 10 was children, 5 of them was women. That means, to kill one Taliban commander, more than 15 has died for no reason. Then who is murderer now? U.S military want to punish Taliban since they killed people by terror, and US military killed people then who now accuse them of murder? Well , measuring the badness of what they have done between US military and Taliban, Taliban is definitely the worst.  I don’t mean that Taliban’s sin can be justified by what U.S military’s have done, I just want to say punishment without moral is nothing more than revenge.

2. Well , story of US military and Taliban does not really directly impact on my life, but it does provide a chance to rethink about justice, and who’s bad or good, guilty by association: those women and children are relatives of family of Taliban commander, I cannot deny myself feel tamped down with knowing they were Taliban commander’s relatives not just children of others’.  and many other things.

1. Warm weather has made fighting intensified.

2. Taliban keeps killing people.

3. It is third time in a week that civilian casualties has been issued.

Red meat chemical ‘damages heart’, say US scientists

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-22042995

1. Red meat is one of my favorite, I never can give up, but the article said that red meat truly increases the danger of heart disease. It is not a just myth. This article is from UK, but the story of  USA’s might be worse because USA consumes high fat red meat a lot more that other countries since the barometer of ‘good meat’ is depend on how much fat contained, and of course the more fat it has, the higher it’s ranked.  To makes things even worse, in Korea, people consumes high fat meat seriously a lot more (than USA), you will never can see normal red meat which barely has fat in it, in Korea. In terms of Authentic voice, This article provides useful  information and it also  latently encourage to reduce red meat consumption.

2. Compared to other articles, it has somewhat direct impact on my life. Once I got to know that red meat is bad to heart, I would consider it whenever I have a chance to have a meat. Since it has a ‘information’ ,I think, it has more impact on life than other argument, opinion.

-“In the UK, the government recommends eating no more than 70g of red or processed meat a day – the equivalent of two slices of bacon.”

-The cholesterol and saturated fat content of lean red meat is not that high, there’s something else contributing to increases in cardiovascular risk.

-The answer is gut bug.

An Exhibition for Students Who Lost Art in a Studio Fire

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/04/11/arts/design/a-showing-for-students-who-lost-art-at-pratt-institute-fire.html?hp&_r=0

1. it is story about art school had a fire and ended up having a exhibition in the gallery which is located in Brooklyn. From the fact that their painting mostly got burnt, and they will have a exhibition in the gallery, most of story are deeply related to me and I can feel them.If I were one of them, how I would feel like? well, even a shitty work, I would be very sad if it get burned. but, If I got a chance to exhibit my work, that would be awesome.

2. This article made me think that I should be more careful in studio , unless it would be disaster in senior year !. Today, when I went to my senior studio class in Flagg hall, I noticed that one of my work which is hung in the air, fell off from the ceiling due to the wind last night. Some one left window open during a night. Well, Usually no one blames opened window but to me, it was not good. because I should show the work to my professors and get a feed back on it. It is coincidence to see a article about studio had a fire burning on a day when my works had been destroyed by wind, but it is enough to emphasize the importance of caring studio.

1. The exhibitions is arranged by Larry Gagosian who is owner of Gagosian gallery.

2.He also had a fire at his house in 2011

3.Students actually are glad that their paintings are modified by fire and brought up new possibility with their work.

In Colorado, Obama makes new push for gun control laws

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-22021702

  1. What intrigued to choose this article

I love everything about USA other than gun. I don’t like gun regulation of t his country’s and health insurance.   I don’t really know what kind of procedure is required to possess a gun but , I believe the more strict checking is the better. It is stupid idea that you can protect your self with gun from any danger, especially form the other gun. Gun cannot save no one. if you fire your gun to protect your self from the other gun, that does not mean protecting or saving. It is just that you are either able to kill him. Gun does not work like shield, the more gun means the more death.

  1. In what ways does it impact your own life

This article informed me that president Obama’s eager to reform gun regulation faces a bumpy ride.  Even after we had a tragic caused by gun, some people still are on the side of gun possession without any safe guard. That means I might live in fear of gun for more several years.

3. List 1-5 important points you took from the article

-The long-dormant US gun control debate revived in December after a gunman killed 26 people, including 20 children, at a primary school in Newtown, Connecticut.

-There was a school shooting in 1999 and movie theatre massacre in 2012 that killed 12 and wounded dozens

-Gun sales increased in Connecticut as the legislation was announced on Monday.
